Student health insurance in Europe: which insurance is accepted for visas and residence?

October 20269 min read

Health insurance is a condition for visas and residence permits and protects you if you get ill. But in many countries the insurance needed before travelling differs from the one needed after enrolment. This guide helps you choose the right insurance.

Two stages of insurance

  1. Before travel, for the visa: usually travel or incoming insurance covering the period from arrival until your main insurance starts.
  2. After arrival and enrolment: your main student insurance, valid throughout your studies.

Germany

For a German student visa you usually need incoming/travel insurance with at least €30,000 coverage for the period between arrival and the start of the semester. After enrolling, students usually join statutory (public) health insurance; students not eligible for it (for example some students over 30) may need private insurance.

Finland

According to the Finnish Immigration Service (Migri), you must take out private insurance covering medical and pharmaceutical costs for a study permit, and Migri notes that students must personally cover costs if they become ill. Check the exact coverage requirements (depending on study length) on Migri's website.

Hungary

According to the EU Immigration Portal, health insurance is one of the conditions and documents for a Hungarian study permit. Many universities recommend accepted insurance or a student insurance package. According to official information, Stipendium Hungaricum scholars receive health insurance as part of the scholarship.

Romania

According to Study in Europe and the EU Immigration Portal, valid health insurance is one of the documents for a Romanian study visa, and insurance accepted in Romania is required for the student residence permit.

Turkey

According to Study in Europe, you must have valid health insurance in Turkey, either private or Turkey's General Health Insurance (GSS), which gives access to public healthcare.

How to choose the right insurance

  • The insurance period must match your visa or residence period.
  • Coverage must meet the embassy's minimums (e.g. coverage amount and hospitalisation).
  • The insured name must match your passport exactly.
  • Read the terms on pre-existing conditions, dental care and deductibles.
  • Before buying, ask your university which insurance it accepts.
Common mistakeInsurance that is shorter than your stay or lacks the required coverage is a common reason for delays or refusals. See visa refusal reasons.
