Study abroad timeline: what to do 12 months before you start

September 20264 min read

The biggest mistake students make is starting late. Document legalisation and embassy appointments can take months, especially for Iranian and Afghan passport holders. That's why we recommend planning 9–12 months before your start date.

12–9 months before: choose a route and start documents

  • Choose the right route for your education, language and budget (our first consultation is free).
  • Check your passport and renew it if needed.
  • Start official translations and legalisation of your certificates.

9–6 months before: apply

  • Complete and submit your application.
  • Follow each university's deadlines; some programmes close early.

6–3 months before: admission and visa

  • After your acceptance, prepare the visa documents.
  • Book the embassy appointment as early as possible.
  • Prepare proof of funds and health insurance.

3 months to departure

  • Follow up on the visa decision
  • Find a dorm room or apartment (for Hungary we support you at this stage too)
  • Plan your travel and first days

This is a general plan; exact timing depends on the country and programme. Start the document checklist now so nothing is missed.
